Howard Kern currently serves as the President and Chief Operating Officer for Sentara Healthcare, as well as Chief Executive Officer for its hospital division, and Chairman of the Board of Sentara's Bay Primex insurance division. He has been employed by Sentara Healthcare since 1980. Mr. Kern received his Master of Health Administration degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1981; he received an undergraduate degree from the State University of New York in 1978.

Mr. Kern is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a member of numerous professional and community organizations. Mr. Kern is a member of the Board of Directors of Sentara Health Plans, Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, VHA Central Atlantic, Virginia Shared Hospital Services Corporation, and Virginia Health Network. He has previously served on regional boards for the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, Junior Achievement, and Rotary; he is a former member of the Board of the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine and the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Kern was appointed to the Board of Visitors for Norfolk State University by the Governor of Virginia in 2003; he serves as chairman of that institution's Finance and Audit Committees, and is a member of the Research & Technology Committee. He is an Affiliate Professor of the Medical College of Virginia, Department of Health Administration.
