Fred M. Rankin, III, was born and raised in Akron, Ohio.  After graduating from Firestone High School in Akron, Ohio, he matriculated at Dartmouth College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973.  After college and a few years working as a hospital orderly, he enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health.  Mr. Rankin received his Masters of Public Health degree in 1978.

Mr. Rankin began his professional career at the Forbes Health System, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he served his Administrative Residency.  After the completion of his residency, he was appointed to the position of Assistant to the Medical Director and later he served as an Assistant Administrator at Forbes Regional Health Center.  In 1981, Mr. Rankin was appointed an Associate Vice President of Allegheny General Hospital, a large academic medical center, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Mr. Rankin was promoted to Vice President in 1986 and Senior Vice President in 1989.  In 1992, Mr. Rankin was appointed President of Mary Washington Hospital, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  In 1995, he was promoted to and continues to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of MediCorp Health System, a private not-for-profit regional health system of 28 health care facilities and wellness centers, including Mary Washington Hospital and the soon to be opened Stafford Hospital Center.

Mr. Rankin is a Past-President of the Rappahannock Area United Way, and continues to serve on the United Way’s Board of Directors.  Mr. Rankin has also served on the Board of Directors of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce.  He served as the Chairman of the Board of the Chamber of Commerce in 2000.  He is currently the Chairman of the Chamber Enterprises Board of Directors.  Mr. Rankin is also involved in Economic Development activities in the region, including serving on the Board of Directors of the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance, a public-private partnership.  Mr. Rankin also served for ten years on the Board of Directors of Rappahannock Goodwill Industries.

On the professional front, Mr. Rankin is a member of the Board of Directors for the Central Atlantic Region of VHA, Inc., a health care provider alliance of more than 2,400 not-for-profit health care organizations.  Mr. Rankin served as Board Chairman for VHA Central Atlantic from 2005 through 2007. Mr. Rankin is a past Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Hospital and Health Care Association (VHHA), and currently serves as a member of the VHHA’s Board of Directors.  Additionally, Mr. Rankin is a Delegate to the American Hospital Association’s Region 3 Policy Board. Mr. Rankin is board certified in Healthcare Management and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

In addition to these activities, Mr. Rankin has been active in Boy Scouting.  He has served as a Cubmaster and an Assistant Scoutmaster.  He was the recipient of the Good Scout Award in 1998, the American Heart Association’s Point of Light Award in 2002 and the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Prince B. Woodard Leadership Award in 2003.  Mr. Rankin is an avid reader.  He enjoys all types of literature.  Mr. Rankin is also a member of the Fredericksburg Baptist Church Adult Choir.

Mr. Rankin is married to Barbara Burnham Rankin who teaches chemistry at Stafford High School.  He and Barbara are the proud parents of three children: Genny, age 26, a graduate of Randolph-Macon College and currently an MBA student at the University of Richmond; Allison, age 23, a graduate of the University of Virginia, who currently works for the American Society of Association Executives and The Center for Association Leadership; and Philip, age 22, who serves in the United States Navy.  The Rankin family live in South Stafford, Virginia.
